New winery: Château Revelette2018/10/24


Nestled in the very heart of Provence, 30 km north of Aix-en-Provence, in the commune of Jouques, lies Revelette, as resolutely unspoiled, wild and mysterious as ever. Sheltered by Mount Saint-Victoire, amidst thousands of hectares of woodland, a building, cellars, vines… A wine-growing estate with but one vocation: make real wine.

Classified as Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence appellation, Château Revelette has established its old house and its 24 hectares of vineyards on a northern terroir.
It’s part of Sainte-Victoire’s park where centenary trees can be found.

30 ha of vineyards, 17 plots of vines at an altitude of between 330 and 400 m, 11 grape varieties.
The continental climate with its cold, harsh winters and hot summers, has made this “terroir” the most septentrional of the Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence appellation.

– “Ecocert” certified organic

– Ploughing post-harvest and in the spring

– Natural grassing-down during winter

-Sheep dung according to vigour and need. Treatment with (very) small doses of copper, trace elements, nettle and horsetail slurry, algae juice, sulphur

-“Green” harvest, small yields

-Manual harvesting in 20 kg crates

In the cellar:

A traditional cellar, concrete tanks and modern equipment to ensure respectful vinification
Two barrel cellars for maturing both white and red wine.

-Depending on vintage specifics, observation and tasting

-Vinification and ageing with small doses of sulphur dioxide; “rational” use of SO2 at bottling.

-Fermentation at controlled temperatures

-Where possible, no enzymes, fining agent or other additives, no commercial yeast

-Bottling on the estate

The estate produces two ranges of wines:

“Château” wines: young and aromatic, pure, delightful. Vinification and maturing in concrete tanks.
The «Château» range is the reflection of the harmony that reigns between soil, climate and vintage.

“Grands vins”: vinified and aged in barrels, powerful and tasty. A beautifully complex wine, true to itself, powerful. Elegance and balance magnified by vinification and maturing in oak barrels.
Maturing allows the wine to ‘breathe’, age comfortably. Maturity, fullness, harmony and personality are all words embodying the true nature of this wine. Recognising this wine in a blind tasting and placing them within their geographical context is our ultimate reward. Grands Vins, Le Grand Blanc and Le Grand Rouge and Série Or are built for long-term cellaring.


PUR are for the winemaker a way to experience and develop later in Grand vins.
These wines are available in white, rosé and red, just ripe harvested to express the of fruit and freshness. Wines of great drinkability.

 

 


New winery: Château de Roquefort2018/10/22

 
Raimond de Villeneuve’s impressively beautiful, biodynamic vineyard is situated in an amphitheater, thus having a very special microclimate. Château de Roquefort is at an altitude of almost 400 meters, allowing later harvesting, which results in more freshness and greater phenolic maturity, and therefore more complexity than is usual in Provençal wines.

The vineyard is composed of 25 hectares of clay and limestone soils.
Grape variety: traditional grape varieties of the region: Black Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Clairette, Rolle, Ugni.
For a third, vines are over 40 years old, for a third between 15 and 40 years old and for the last third between 1 and 15 years old. From the Sainte-Baume massif, which rises to an altitude of 1042m, the relief towards the sea is formed by long mountain ranges and high plateaus.
altitude of 350 to 390m protected by an imposing rocky cirque on terraces and slopes. This wild and precious environment favors this very advantageous microclimate created by the altitude of the soil and by a slight marine influence.

Raymond de Villeneuve philosophy: maintain the equilibrium of nature: soil cultivation, organic manure, natural phytosanitary protection, no insecticides or synthetic products.
 
2017 was very humid: mildiou appreared, the winemaker tried to limit the pressing of the wine, treated with manure, horsetail, oak bark, nettles, fermented seaweed purée.
 
The important thing is to work on the metabolism, very little use of copper and sufer.
 
Winemaking way : the wines try to tend towrd silky and fruity characteristics for red wines.
 
“I just try to translate what nature give us, and try to express as closely as possible our terroir”.

The family De Villeneuve Flayosc owns this castle since 1812 when Hippolyte De Villeneuve Flayosc, Raymond’s great-grandfather, bought it. Located 380 meters above sea level in the middle of a circus surrounded by a rocky bar, the estate was once the property of the archbishop of Marseille who practiced polyculture.

The vineyards of the Rhone Valley, which forms a corridor between the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, have been producing wines for at least 2000 years.
In the 14th century, the papacy moved from Rome to Avignon and the popes, great lovers of the local wines, planted extensive vineyards around the city and participated to grow the popularity of the wines.

Rhônes wines are the second vineyard AOC in France.
The wine indutry is the most important sources of employment of the area. The offer in diversity is exceptional in France with for the most important red wines 80%.

250 km from north to south, 250 communes (local authority areas, often villages)… The vineyards of the Rhone Valley are a world apart, a shifting landscape which winds and unwinds around a fluid axis: the Rhone, king of rivers, carrying silt and a sense of history. The Rhone is the linking factor, holding together these contrasting landscapes.

On top of the pyramid: 17 Crus and 2 types of sweet wines
Then: 21 Côtes du Rhône Villages
Followed by AOC Côtes du Rhône Villages and AOC Côtes du Rhône Regionale
A pyramid in constant evolution
These represent 75%, 25% are represented by satellite appelation as Costières de Nîmes, Lubéron, Ventoux,etc..
North and South-
The north of the appellation is mainly a specialist of “crus” reds and whites as Saint Joseph or Condrieu, Hermitage,etc..
The south is more rich in term of appelations than the north.
The “crus” are in constant evolution-
While there is a great number of old vines new plantation are also important. It allows an evolution of the appelations. For exemple Cairanne AOC became a “cru” in 2016.
3000 ha are now in a process of renewal and 619 ha of new plantation were planted in 2016.
2 types of climates:
-The south has a mediterranean climate: warm/few rain/Mistral(south wind)
-The north has a continental climate: less hot/more rain/but good level of sunlight through the year/wind(Guise)
These two types of wind help to keep the vines dry and allow winemakers to adopt organic agriculture.
2 types of landscapes:
-south: wide plains/flat landscape/”guarrigues”/olive trees
-north: more abrupt/presence of many vineyards in terraces
There is a significant difference between both
Soils:
north: clay, giving powerful aromas and tannins to the wines and granit, specific to the north, gives delicacy and acidity to the wines
south: clay/pebbles. Clay gives the wines their full-body characteristic and their softness. Sands give delicacy.
Grapes varieties:
Rhone wines derive their style, richness and originality from the diversity of the region’s grape varieties.
28 grapes varieties.
Particularity of Rhône wines: many blended wines
4 main red grape varieties:
-red Grenache, ample/generous/heady
-Cinsault, light/delicate
-Syrah, king of the North, red/black fruits/violet aromas, aromatic/delicate
-Mourvèdre, powerful, structured
GSM= grenache/syrah/mourvèdre, the most used blend of wines in Rhône
4 main white grapes varieties:
-white Grenache, full and plump
-Viognier (Condrieu), fragant and subtle
-Roussane, delicate, fineness
-Marsanne powerful and vigorous
In brief: North= mono-grapes wines, granitic soil, structured wines with minerality
South= blended wines, diversity of the soils more important and wines more powerful and generous than the North.

Harvest 2018 Domaine du Gros Noré2018/10/4

Hand picked and carefully selected grapes at Domaine du Gros Noré.
Temperatures in the morning: 18 degrees at 7am and already reaching 28 degrees at 12am. Ugni and Clairette for white. Grapes are showing a beautiful balance between sweetness and acidity this year!

グルナッシュの宴-

Let’s celebrate the most planted grape variety in the world and be a Grenachista with aVin’s team for a day!

The Grenache Association created the International Day to celebrate this grape and all the varieties and vintages of wine that were produced from it.

In fact, over the ages that have passed since it first began being used and cultivated, new varieties have appeared.

Grenache noir “red Grenache” is the most commonly known, but there’s also Grenache Blanc and of such importance that it ranks on the fourth most planted white wine in France.

There’s even one called “Hairy Grenache” developed to protect itself from transpiration through the same underleaf fuzz mechanic present in rosemary and other plants of the Mediterranean.

International Grenache Day gives the opportunity to explore this wine, its history, and become just a little bit of an oenophile for a day.
It’s held every third Friday of September, this year on the Friday 21st and on Saturday 22nd for avin’s team.
